When Citra and cable TV shook our world
There are many things that bind together those of us who grew up in India(okay, maybe just Delhi) in the 80's and nineties. Our games Vish amrit (lock and key for the slightly more sophisticated), oonch neech ka papda... what we read- amar chitra katha, tinkle (tantri the mantri and co.), our outings- picnincs with the family to lodhi gardens and later " night spends" at a friend's.The tele- Chandrakanta Number 1, Chitrahaar and the news with the little corner window for the sign language. Wonder years in English, Bewitched in Hindi. nirma detergent tikia, doodh doodh -wonderful doodh!
The kuttis and the abbas. The truths and dares. The crushes, the "proposals", first kisses. The " BOARD" exams.
That life seems so far away now. And yet when I say these words all together like this it brings a reaction so strong that I find myself searching for words to describe it. I miss who I was back then, who everyone was, what everything was like- or at least what I thought everything was like as a child. I suppose it is nothing more than the human tendency to glorify the past- after all 'old is gold'- supposedly.
I suppose this generation will have it's own nostalgic terms- john abraham and keira knightley , hanging out at malls, making out in classrooms, being part of youth clubs that plan to save the world... God knows what it will be. I realize I can't help but sound a little disrespectful- but hey..they're someone else's moments, someone else's memories. As for me... mine are safe in a bubble, getting more and more beautiful, more and more precious- as I leave them further and further behind me. It seems as if the more unpleasant moments in my childhood have melted away. I can only hope that when my present and my future become my past- it's a sweet memory to recall- even if at some level I know I didn't always think of it that way.

Hey Medhs! So far, whenever I'v clicked on the 'Inconsquential' tab, its taken me to ur landing page and I was meaning to ask you sometime -'Why don't you write?' Didn't bother scrolling down and following the link to your actual blog. Anyways - nice stuff.
It took a lot to get me blogging, more 'coz I hated being part of anything that was turning into this mega obsession with the general public. But blogs are a great way to express - you write for urself, and yet its for others to see.Quite nice.
Btw, ur earlier post on "Express Yourself" was lovely. Particularly liked this portion
I love raw torrid passion or listless peaceful submission or hapless senseless meanderings or smiling through your tears or dreamy-eyed foolish as can be romanticism or wanting to pull your heart out so it stops aching..... write it as you feel it and someone else will feel it with you!
thanks! i never actually read what I write before posting it, so its nice to know how it reads :)
